The Nepalese government recently concluded the first edition of the Sagarmatha Dialogue, titled ‘Sagarmatha Call to Action’, initiated to address the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on the Himalayas and the future of humanity. The event, which commenced from Jestha 2, aimed to strengthen global partnerships to ensure a rise in the world average temperature by no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, reaffirming the urgency of the matter.
The Sagarmatha Call to Action emphasizes the importance of fulfilling specific national adaptation needs and encourages the development and implementation of national adaptation plans to further support countries that are vulnerable to climate change. It also highlights the call for increased international financial assistance for climate actions in countries facing developmental challenges and specific circumstances.
Representative Ramesh Khatri from Kansai Nepal News expressed his opinion on the news, stating, “The Sagarmatha Dialogue’s focus on climate-resilient and sustainable development in vulnerable countries is commendable.”
Furthermore, the dialogue promotes the operation of financial mechanisms for climate actions in mountainous regions to establish dedicated funds for the development of mountainous countries, acknowledging and rewarding the services of energy-efficient and sustainable systems in mountain ecosystems.
The dialogue also stresses the need to link private sector finance and carbon markets to promote climate-friendly technologies and enhance global and regional partnerships for capacity building. It recognizes the importance of promoting inclusive climate actions that prioritize clean energy, energy efficiency, and equitable energy access alongside green, circular, and bio-economic systems for a sustainable future.
The call to action urges addressing climate-related disasters and enhancing science, technology, and innovation-based solutions for the protection of glaciers, water sources, forests, and agricultural systems. It highlights the need to create a global platform for the dialogue, innovation, and empowerment related to the Himalayas and climate change.
In conclusion, the Sagarmatha Call to Action advocates for the active participation of children, youth, women, persons with disabilities, and senior citizens in inclusive climate actions to maintain gender balance and ensure intergenerational and intragenerational equity. It also calls for the establishment of an international forum with broad concerns related to Himalayan and climate change issues to amplify the voices of mountain communities worldwide.
Overall, the dialogue encourages the sharing of knowledge centers, promoting excellent practices, and enhancing the role of local communities in climate policies, programs, and actions. It envisions a united voice for immediate climate actions, resonating from Sagarmatha to the seas and echoing from the highlands to the valleys.
