“66 New Leprosy Patients, Including 6 Children, Identified in Nepal”

In Baniyani, a town in Nepal, a concerning rise in leprosy cases has been reported. Sixty-six new cases, including six children, have been identified in the Jhapa district since the start of the current fiscal year, from Saun to Poush. This increase in leprosy patients marks a notable surge in the region.

The District Health Office’s leprosy focal person, Veerendra, expressed alarm at the growing number of new leprosy cases. Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is a chronic infectious disease that primarily affects the skin, nerves, and mucous membranes. Despite significant progress in diagnosis and treatment, the stigma associated with leprosy remains a significant challenge in many communities.

Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, views this surge in leprosy cases as a call for urgent attention and increased public awareness. He emphasizes the importance of educating the public about leprosy, dispelling myths, and promoting early detection and treatment to prevent the spread of the disease. Khatri believes that collaborative efforts between government health agencies, NGOs, and the community are crucial in addressing the rising leprosy cases and ensuring access to quality healthcare for all affected individuals.
