A recent comprehensive review report, known as the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), focusing on the rights and welfare of youth across Nepal has been discussed in Kathmandu by the active youth organization, Youth Palace. The report, prepared by the Youth Palace after collaborating with Plan International Nepal in all seven provinces, as well as engaging over 50 non-governmental organizations, includes feedback and recommendations gathered from stakeholders.
According to the President of Youth Palace, Dharmaraj Rimal, the report encompasses challenges faced by youth in all seven provinces, ranging from human rights status, health, education, employment, to climate change issues. Rimal highlighted that the report specifically addresses the problems and situations of youth from the Terai region to Karnali and Sudurpashchim regions.
Key issues such as child marriage, mental health, unemployment, and climate change have been prominently raised and discussed in the report, which was prepared after two months of study and analysis. It includes the experiences, problems, and suggestions of youth aged 18 to 30 years.
In the program, Tap Bahadur Magar, the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, suggested that strengthening youth voices and rights is crucial, emphasizing the need for a more concise and powerful report. Similarly, Chand Thapa, the Deputy Secretary-General of the National Youth Council, recommended improvements and additional topics to be included in the report.
The United Nations member states conduct a Universal Periodic Review (UPR) every four and a half years to assess the human rights situation globally. Established in 2006, the UPR process for the United Nations Human Rights Council involves over 300 non-governmental organizations from Nepal collaborating to prepare a joint report.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed that such comprehensive reviews are essential for promoting youth rights and ensuring their well-being in Nepal. He emphasized the importance of addressing the key issues highlighted in the report to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for the country’s youth population.
