The Nepal Teachers Association officials engaged in discussions with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Friday regarding the ongoing teacher strike and possible solutions to the issues at hand. The discussions stemmed from the demands put forth by the association, which have been ongoing since Chaitra 20, leading teachers to initiate protests centered in Kathmandu.

During the discussions, Prime Minister Oli addressed the legitimate demands raised by the teachers and directed the Home Ministry to engage in dialogue to find solutions to the problems. On Chaitra 25, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Vishnu Prasad Poudel, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, Education, Science, and Technology Minister Vidya Bhattarai, among others, were tasked with providing guidance on addressing the issues.

In a subsequent meeting of the Council of Ministers in Baishakh 2, the School Education Bill, which has been under consideration in the federal parliament, was to be passed for the purpose of convening a federal parliament session and coordinating with the government to ensure the bill’s passage. A decision was made to convene a meeting on Friday, Baishakh 12, at 1 p.m. to pass the bill as necessary for coordination and facilitation.

The same Council of Ministers meeting emphasized the need for continuous dialogue on the appropriate addressing of the demands raised by the teachers’ association. The government, being sensitive and serious about the matter, urged teachers to return to schools after focusing on the National Campaign for Education, the Supplementary Examination of SEE, and the Grade 12 Examinations.

In the discussions held at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, the President of the Teachers Association, Laxmikishor Suvedi, Vice President Nanumaya Parajuli, General Secretary Tul Bahadur Thapa, and Deputy General Secretary Madan Raj Joshi were present.

Ramesh Khatri, representative of Kansai Nepal News, stated that the government’s response to the ongoing teacher strike reflects a positive step towards addressing the concerns raised by the teachers. The engagement of high-level officials in discussions shows a willingness to find solutions and prioritize education matters.
