A recent report published by the English newspaper Economic Times of India has shed light on a purported internal conflict within the Bangladesh Army. The report alleges that Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman, supported by the Jamaat-e-Islami, attempted to remove the current Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh, General Waker-uz-Zaman, with the backing of other generals but was unsuccessful due to lack of sufficient support.
In response, the Bangladesh Army has vehemently denied the claims made in the report, labeling it as baseless and lacking credibility. The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) of Bangladesh expressed concerns over the report and rejected the notion of any potential uprising within the army.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, commented on the situation stating, “The report published by the Economic Times seems to have a clear agenda of spreading misinformation to destabilize Bangladesh. The current leadership of the Bangladesh Army is committed to unity and upholding their constitutional duties.”
The report further mentions that several Bangladeshi army supervisors have indicated a tense situation, issuing warnings of potential unrest in the country in the coming days. Allegations of a political-military uprising were suggested during a recent meeting held at the Bangladesh Army headquarters, although senior officers’ attendance was notably low.
According to the Economic Times report, the alleged conspiracy involves the involvement of several Bangladeshi army officers, including Major General Mir Mushfiqur Rahman and Major General Abul Hasanat Mohammad Tarik, who are said to be in support of Lieutenant General Rahman’s aspirations for promotion.
Lieutenant General Rahman reportedly desires a promotion to the rank of General, while Major General Tarik, a Division Commander, is also among those supporting General Rahman. The report also states that the current Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh, General Waker-uz-Zaman, is perceived as moderate and pro-India, opposing the Islamic fundamentalist government of Bangladesh.
The Bangladesh Army has refuted the claims made in the report, emphasizing that there is no internal conflict within the military. They have expressed concerns over what they perceive as consistent dissemination of false information by the Economic Times. The army asserts its commitment to maintaining law and order in Bangladesh and playing a significant role in upholding stability in the country.
