In a recent development, public transportation operators in Gandaki Province have decided to halt their services starting from Monday in protest against the Gandaki Province government’s decision to legalize ride-sharing services. The government’s move to allow private vehicles to be used for ride-sharing under the name of ‘Ride Sharing’ has sparked controversy and led to this protest.
The Gandaki Province government, by issuing regulations, has enabled private vehicles to be used for passenger transportation under the guise of ride-sharing. In response, protesting transportation operators have announced that they will cease their services by parking their vehicles at home or in garages starting from Monday.
Business owners who staged protests in Pokhara and Kathmandu on Sunday have planned further demonstrations. Various public transportation organizations such as the Central National Transport Federation, Nepal Transport Business National Federation, Nepal Transport Business Association, Nepal Transport Workers Union, All Nepal Transport Workers Union, United Nepal Transport Workers Union, and Nepal Independent Transport Workers Union are actively involved in the protest.
Representative Ramesh Khatri from Kansai Nepal News expressed his opinion on the matter, stating that the government’s failure to listen has created a situation where operators feel compelled to suspend transportation services. The image below shows the demonstration carried out by the operators.
