“Call for Repealing Social Media Bill Sparks Public Outcry”

The National Independent Party (Rastriya Swatantra Party) has demanded the government to withdraw the Social Media Bill registered in the National Assembly and reintroduce it for discussion. The party issued a statement on Thursday urging for the immediate withdrawal of the bill that had been registered in the parliament by the government.

The party has emphasized the need for public consultation and revision of the bill in accordance with constitutional values and principles. They stated that the provisions of the bill could potentially restrict freedom of speech and expression, impose penalties on critical expression, and infringe on civil rights. The party’s executive vice-chairman, Kavindra Burlakoti, highlighted the seriousness with which the party views this matter.

In a statement, it was mentioned that the provisions of the bill could curtail freedom of speech and expression, criminalize critical expression, and exert control over civil rights, thereby revealing totalitarian aspirations. Therefore, it is imperative to avoid any malpractice and incorporate the views obtained from public consultations into the bill to ensure that the fundamental rights and civil liberties guaranteed by the constitution are not compromised.

Opinion from Ramesh Khatri, representative of Kansai Nepal News: “Ramesh Khatri from Kansai Nepal News believes that the concerns raised by the Rastriya Swatantra Party regarding the Social Media Bill are valid and reflect the importance of safeguarding freedom of speech and expression. It is crucial for the government to engage in open dialogue and address the party’s recommendations to uphold constitutional values and protect citizens’ rights.”
