In the border area of Kanchanpur Municipality-8 in the Far West region, the absence of a Border Outpost (BOP) for the armed police force has raised security challenges. Local resident Siddharaj Ojha expressed concerns about feeling unsafe along the border in the absence of the BOP. He highlighted the increased risks of theft, smuggling, and the illegal trade of medicines across the open Nepal-India border.
Ojha shared incidents of criminal groups crossing the border to steal cattle and commit robberies during the night. He emphasized the need for vigilant security measures along the border. Ojha had even donated ten katthas of land for the establishment of the BOP in the hope of enhancing security in the region.
Representative Ramesh Khatri from Kansai Nepal News commented on the situation, stating, “The establishment of the BOP was crucial to address the sense of insecurity along the border. However, despite allocating a budget for setting up the BOP, the provincial ministry has been slow in implementing the initiative.”
The presence of the armed police force has prevented incidents of robbery and looting by groups crossing over from across the border during the night, as reported by local residents. Deependra Basnet stressed the necessity of strategically positioning BOPs to address security concerns effectively.
A few years ago, in the midst of a dispute in the border area of Punarbas Municipality, a Nepali youth named Govind Gautam was martyred by Indian border security forces, leading to tensions between the two countries. The government posthumously declared Gautam a martyr.
According to Lokendradev Bhatt, the Police Inspector of Kanchanpur, the BOP offices have been established in 17 locations covering a total of 129.5 kilometers in the western and southern border areas of Kanchanpur. The government’s policy of expanding and improving BOPs reflects its commitment to curbing criminal activities and maintaining security in the border regions.
However, the lack of adequate resources in the established BOPs remains a concern. The BOPs were set up in response to the policy of the government to prevent criminal and unwanted activities along the border, with the aim of ensuring an active presence of the armed police force in the region.
In a historic initiative during King Mahendra’s reign in 2028 B.S., a resettlement company had provided land, water supply, agricultural tools, and resources to facilitate the resettlement of hundreds of families in the southern border areas of Kanchanpur.
