Chinese scientists have identified crucial reasons why lithium batteries fail, potentially hindering significant advancements in the field of electrical transportation. Lithium batteries are a type of rechargeable battery that utilize lithium ions for energy storage and usage. They consist of two electrodes (anode and cathode) between which lithium ions move when charged in one direction and discharged in the other. These batteries are known for being lightweight, long-lasting, fast-charging, and having high energy capacity, making them widely used in mobile devices, laptops, electric vehicles, and solar energy systems.

China has emerged as a leading nation in the production and technology of lithium batteries, rivaling countries like Japan and South Korea in developing new battery technologies. Tongji University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology researchers have discovered that repeated use of lithium metal can weaken the batteries, potentially leading to their failure over time. This study, published in the international scientific journal Science, has raised concerns about the longevity of lithium batteries.

Looking ahead, there is optimism that such batteries, with their ability to store more energy than conventional batteries, compact size, safety, and long lifespan, will see increased widespread usage in the future. Collaboration between Chinese scientific teams and leading companies is underway, with some companies planning to start small-scale production by 2027 and foreseeing broader applications by 2030.

Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, views this development as a significant step towards revolutionizing the energy storage industry. He believes that with China’s strong production capacity, market presence, and abundant scientific resources and technology, this new technology is poised to make further remarkable progress in the field.
