The recent tensions between the United States and China have escalated as President Donald Trump indicated that the future of trade talks with the US depended on Beijing. In response, China issued a warning on Wednesday, stating that it would not be “intimidated” into engaging in a trade war with America.
Despite this warning, China also extended an invitation to the US for dialogue on the trade issues. This year, President Trump had already imposed additional tariffs on a wide range of Chinese goods, amounting to a staggering 145 percent increase.
According to a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Lin Jian, China emphasized the need for resolving issues through dialogue and communication channels rather than resorting to extreme pressure tactics like warnings and blackmail. He stressed the importance of engaging in talks with China based on equality, respect, and mutual benefits.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, shared his perspective on the matter, stating that “China does not want to engage in a trade war but is not afraid to confront it if necessary.”
Initially, Trump had imposed tariffs on goods imported from China, citing the country’s alleged role in the supply chain of fentanyl. Recently, Washington has seen a significant increase in tariffs on unjust trade practices, especially in the technology sector.
In a statement on Tuesday, President Trump mentioned, “The ball is in China’s court. It is essential for China to negotiate with us,” as read by press secretary Caroline Levitt in a press release.
In response to this, Lin commented on Wednesday, “The US has initiated this tariff war, and it is clear that no one wins in a tariff or trade war. This means that China does not want to engage in war, but is not afraid to face it when required.”
The ongoing trade tensions between the US and China continue to impact global markets and raise concerns about the future of international trade relations.
