A recent incident at the central office of Kathmandu Metropolitan City involving contaminated drinking water has raised concerns among residents. The water supply, which tested positive for coliform bacteria upon inspection, has led to the imposition of a fine of NPR 2 million.

In addition to the penalty, the municipal authorities have also taken action to terminate the agreement with the water supply company responsible for distributing the contaminated water. Following a directive from the Department of Agriculture and Livestock, the municipal officials have canceled the supply agreement based on a decision made at the administrative level.

Nur Nidhi Nyupane, the chief of the department, confirmed the cancellation, stating that the technical examination of the water supply revealed the presence of coliform bacteria. According to Nyupane, the company violated the provisions of the Market Management and Monitoring Act 2077, resulting in the hefty fine of NPR 2 million.

Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed his concern about the incident. “This situation underscores the importance of ensuring the safety and quality of drinking water for the residents of Kathmandu. It is imperative that strict measures are in place to prevent such incidents in the future,” Khatri emphasized.
