In Kathmandu, the National Human Rights Commission has initiated an investigation into the tragic death of Nepali student Prakriti Lamsal, who was studying at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. This incident has raised concerns, prompting the commission to communicate with the National Human Rights Commission of India.
According to the commission’s spokesperson, Shyam Babu Kafle, the Nepali students have requested a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the encounter with the deceased at the university hostel. Allegations of mistreatment and violence have been cited as reasons for seeking an inquiry into the matter.
The letter addressed to the Indian commission emphasizes the need for a comprehensive investigation into the suspicious death to ensure justice for the affected individuals. It calls for swift justice for students who have been subjected to violence and mistreatment at the university, guaranteeing a safe environment for Nepali students to study without fear, and holding university officials and individuals accountable for their actions within the legal framework.
On February 19, the National Human Rights Commission of Nepal sent a formal communication to the Indian counterpart. Additionally, based on received reports, the commission has been gathering information about the incident and the condition of the student through official channels such as the Nepali embassy in India and other media outlets.
