Following the devastating floods in 2070 BS, India has reportedly been constructing embankments along the Nepali territory in Veerendra Van of Khalanga, situated in the Darachula municipality. The embankment construction by India is taking place along the banks of the Mahakali River, bordering Wards 4 and 5 of the Mahakali Municipality.
The one-sided construction of embankments by the Indian side in Nepali territory has raised concerns among the locals, prompting the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) District Committee to submit a memorandum to the Chief District Officer. The memorandum requests immediate diplomatic efforts to halt the construction and prevent any unilateral alterations that could affect the flow of the river in Nepali land.
Anil Poudel, the Chief District Officer, has informed that a memorandum has been submitted to draw the attention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in order to address the ongoing embankment construction that could potentially alter the river’s course in Nepali territory. The District Committee Chairman, Gyanendra Gharti, emphasized the importance of addressing the issue through diplomatic channels to find a feasible resolution.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, pointed out that the international boundary demarcation for the Mahakali River and the region of Gulfapari and Khulamanchaparik has been disrupted by the construction of embankments, urging authorities to intervene and halt the construction activity.
Poudel also revealed that he has been in constant communication with Indian counterparts and has urged for a halt in the construction work. He emphasized the need for diplomatic dialogue to find a mutually acceptable solution to the ongoing issue.
