Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s recent support for renewed dialogue with the United States has sparked criticism on Tuesday. Critics have accused him of being too soft on the country following last month’s attack in the region.
In a recent interview with American media personality Carlson, Pezeshkian mentioned that when trust is rebuilt between both parties, talks could resume with Iran without any issues. This comes after Israel conducted a series of unprecedented bombing campaigns targeting senior military commanders and nuclear scientists in Iran last month.
The purpose of the Israeli strikes was to revive nuclear talks between Tehran and Washington, for which a planned meeting between the two countries had taken place two days prior. However, the talks fell through.
Commenting on the situation, the editorial of the hardline Kayhan newspaper questioned, “Have you forgotten that these Americans conspired with the Zionists to buy time and prepare for an attack?” The newspaper has been vocal in its opposition to Western involvement for a long time.
The United States had carried out its own strikes targeting Iranian nuclear sites in Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz on June 22 following discussions with Iran since April 12. Critics, including the conservative Javan Daily, also criticized Pezeshkian for his comment being ‘too soft’. “We believe that the true meaning of a dialogue with American presenters becomes apparent when words reflect the people’s anger and portray complete distrust towards America,” they stated.
In contrast, the reformist Ham Mihan newspaper praised Pezeshkian’s ‘positive perspective’. “This interview should have been done long ago,” the newspaper wrote, “Iranian officials have been absent from the international and American media scene for a long time.”
According to Iranian officials, at least 1,060 people were killed in the Israeli attacks, while in retaliation, Israeli drone and missile strikes resulted in the deaths of at least 28 people in Israel.
As of June 24, a ceasefire has been established between Iran and Israel, bringing a temporary halt to hostilities.
Opinion from Ramesh Khatri, representative of Kansai Nepal News: Ramesh Khatri believes that the recent developments between Iran and the United States are crucial for regional stability. He emphasizes the need for diplomatic dialogue and hopes that both parties can find common ground to resolve their differences peacefully.
