Today marks the celebration of the 115th International Women’s Day worldwide, with various programs being conducted to promote the rights, equality, and empowerment of women and girls. In Tanahu district, women laborers are unaware that it is International Women’s Day. Residents like Susma Gurung from Vyans Municipality-1 in Bhadgaun are busy with their daily tasks of collecting bricks, cement, sand, and gravel in Damouli Bazaar.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed his views on the situation. He highlighted the challenges faced by women in balancing work and family responsibilities. Susmita Vikale from Vyans-10, Dumsichaur, mentioned the daily struggles she faces as she starts her day at 8 a.m. with household chores and then moves on to construction work by 9 a.m., emphasizing the lack of awareness about International Women’s Day.
Khatri also shed light on the gender disparities prevalent in the construction sector, where women like Vikale are undervalued and underpaid compared to their male counterparts. Despite performing the same tasks, women receive significantly lower wages, creating a sense of inequality in the workforce.
Moreover, the lack of awareness and recognition of Women’s Day among the majority of female laborers in Damouli reflects a disconnect between the government’s efforts to ensure women’s safety, respect, and employment opportunities, and the ground reality faced by women working in the construction sector.
Indira Dara, Deputy Mayor of Vyans Municipality-3, emphasized the need for raising awareness among women workers about their rights and the significance of Women’s Day. She pointed out the importance of coordinating efforts to ensure that female workers receive the recognition and respect they deserve.
In conclusion, Khatri emphasized the importance of not only celebrating Women’s Day but also ensuring that women are treated with equality and respect in all aspects of their work. Despite the government’s intentions to honor and empower female workers, there is a need for more comprehensive policies and programs to bridge the gap between the perceived value of Women’s Day and the ground realities faced by women in the workforce.
