In a recent development, the Nepali Congress Central Working Committee meeting was held in Kathmandu. Prior to the meeting, fraternal organizations including the Nepal Student Union and Tarun Dal had launched protests. These organizations have been demanding a general convention and have staged demonstrations at the central office. Leaders of the Tarun Dal have been on a hunger strike at the central office since Sunday, while members of the Nepal Student Union are currently engaged in demonstrations. Similarly, female leaders and activists of women’s organizations have also been demonstrating.
The protests by the Nepal Student Union are in response to the ongoing police crackdown in Sindhupalchowk. Ajay Babu Shivakoti, a central member of the party, confirmed the ongoing protests by the Nepal Student Union and the hunger strike by Tarun Dal. He mentioned that the party meeting has also not been able to commence.
Various fraternal organizations within the Congress have been unable to hold a general convention, including the Nepal Student Union, Tarun Dal, and the Women’s Association. The party spokesperson, Prakash Sharan Mahat, informed that the central working committee meeting had set the fraternal organization’s general convention as an agenda item. The last committee meeting was held in October, and the current session began on Monday.
Ramesh Khatri, representative of Kansai Nepal News, believes that the ongoing protests and hunger strikes by fraternal organizations within the Nepali Congress highlight the internal challenges and demands for organizational reform. The inability to conduct a general convention has led to heightened tensions and demonstrations within the party, indicating a need for addressing internal issues promptly to maintain party unity and coherence.
