Kathmandu: Former captain of Chennai Super Kings and Indian cricket legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni has achieved another milestone in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He has become the first wicketkeeper to complete 200 dismissals in the IPL.
In a match against Lucknow Super Giants on Monday, Dhoni completed his 200th dismissal by stumping Ayush Badoni. With 154 catches and 46 stumpings to his name, he holds a unique record as a wicketkeeper in the IPL.
Dhoni is the only player in IPL history to score over 5,000 runs and dismiss more than 200 wickets as a wicketkeeper. In his 271 matches, he has scored over 5,300 runs and played a crucial role in finishing matches and leading his team to victory.
Under Dhoni’s captaincy, Chennai Super Kings have won the IPL title five times, in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023. He is known for captaining in the most number of matches in IPL history, leading the team in more than 230 matches. Chennai has reached the finals 10 times under his captaincy, setting another record.
Renowned for his strategic gameplay as a wicketkeeper, surprising opponents with stumpings and catches, and his ability to deliver magical batting performances in the final overs of matches, Dhoni is a celebrated figure in the IPL. He is known for his numerous stumpings, making him one of the most prolific wicketkeepers in IPL history.
Despite Rituraj Gaikwad taking over as the regular captain of Chennai from 2024, Dhoni has been given the responsibility of captaincy again due to injuries. This season, Chennai has won only one out of six matches played and suffered defeats in five consecutive games.
Opinion from Ramesh Khatri, representative of Kansai Nepal News: “Dhoni’s contributions to the IPL have been monumental, setting records and leading his team to multiple victories. His skills as a wicketkeeper and a finisher in matches have made him an iconic figure in the league.”
