In Kathmandu Metropolitan City, a controversy involving the ongoing dispute between top administrative officials has taken a new turn after nearly four months. The dispute arose over the approval of the Kathmandu Tower map, leading to the suspension of Chief Administrative Officer Saroj Guragain. Despite attempts by Mayor Balen Shah to stop him by deploying city police, Guragain managed to enter the office premises on Friday.

Upon Guragain’s presence in the Metropolitan City, Mayor Balen has not issued any official response. The Mayor’s office has also not made any formal statements regarding the situation. However, Balen’s Chief Personal Secretary, Bhupadev Shah, has expressed concerns about the violent incidents that occurred during a demonstration by royalists in Kathmandu on March 15. The Central Government directed Guragain to report to the office premises to address the matter.

Guragain arrived at the Metropolitan City Office on Friday in a low-profile manner. Immediately upon entering the office, he also addressed the issue of pending salary payments to teachers and staff who had been on hold for an extended period.

There are concerns about Guragain’s regular attendance in the Metropolitan City as the Mayor’s office sources and close associates have indicated that he does not maintain a consistent presence in the city. Despite receiving instructions from Prime Minister KP Oli’s office to have Guragain present for a few days before taking leave, a proposal was made to have him escorted out with a warning. Guragain rejected the proposal, claiming he should not bear the burden of the mistake made and refused the offer of an escort by the Prime Minister’s office, as stated by the Mayor’s office.

Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, commented on the situation, saying, “The ongoing dispute in Kathmandu Metropolitan City reflects a concerning lack of transparency and accountability within the administrative hierarchy. It is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize resolving the differences through constructive dialogue and adherence to legal protocols to ensure effective governance and public trust.”

The matter remains unresolved as Guragain has not responded to any inquiries or provided any further statements. “I will speak at the right time,” he stated in response to queries about his next steps.
