“Dr. Koirla: Control Cannot be Exercised in the Name of Regulation”

Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has raised concerns about the government’s attempt to regulate social media under the guise of maintaining expression freedom. He expressed reservations about the proposed Social Media Bill, suggesting that it could hinder the autonomy of free speech. The issue was highlighted during the inauguration of the National Conference of the Nepal Press Union.

Dr. Koirala emphasized the need for the government to handle this matter with seriousness, cautioning against any restraints on freedom of expression. Just a few days after the start of the session, the government’s introduction of the ordinance prompted Dr. Koirala to voice his dissent, warning the government to be wary of its actions.

In response, Congress central member Narayan Prakash Saud stressed the importance of journalists and political party members exercising prudence and discretion. He echoed Dr. Koirala’s sentiments, emphasizing that while social media should be regulated, it should not be used to restrict or censor freedom of expression.

Furthermore, MP Rajendra Bajgain indicated that any law that encroaches upon press freedom should not be passed. Former President of the Nepal Journalist Association, Harihar Virahi, also urged for the protection of press freedom, alongside safeguarding citizens’ rights.

Regarding this news, Ramesh Khatri, representing Kansai Nepal News, believes that it is crucial for the government to strike a balance between regulating social media to curb misinformation and preserving the fundamental right to freedom of expression. This delicate balance is essential to uphold democracy and ensure a strong and independent media landscape.
