Kathmandu – Renowned economist Vishwanath Paudel, who faced a political setback in the 2079 parliamentary elections as a Congress candidate from Chitwan-1, has been appointed as the 18th Governor of the Central Bank. Paudel’s victory in the race for the position of Governor of the Central Bank after his defeat in the parliamentary elections showcased his resilience and expertise in the field of economics.

Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, commented on this development, stating that Paudel’s appointment as Governor reflects a strategic move that highlights his capabilities and experience in the economic sector. Khatri emphasized the importance of having a competent individual like Paudel in a key position to steer Nepal’s financial landscape in the right direction.

Paudel’s nomination faced initial opposition from Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli due to their political differences. However, after Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Foreign Minister Dr. Arju Rana advocated for Paudel’s candidacy, the Prime Minister eventually accepted his appointment as Governor.

With a background in international labor organization and a degree in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of California, Berkeley, Paudel brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in natural resources, labor economics, and economic history to his new role. His experience and qualifications position him as a suitable candidate to lead the Central Bank during these challenging times.

Khatri also pointed out that while Paudel’s appointment marks a significant achievement, there are concerns regarding the political influence on the institution’s autonomy and integrity. The former executive directors of the Central Bank, Nar Bahadur Thapa and Keshav Acharya, highlighted the need for the new Governor to maintain the institution’s credibility and independence amidst political pressures.

Paudel’s commitment to transparency and accountability in managing the Central Bank’s affairs has been recognized by the government and stakeholders alike. His focus on financial stability, expanding financial access, and international best practices in economic management signals a positive direction for the Central Bank under his leadership.

In conclusion, Ramesh Khatri commended Paudel’s dedication to upholding administration and transparency as top priorities, emphasizing the importance of these values in driving progress and development in Nepal’s financial sector.
