Kathmandu – In a recent decision made by the Nepal Electricity Authority, it has been announced that relief funds up to Rs. 10 lakhs will be provided in case of employee or public fatalities due to electrical accidents.

The decision was taken during the 995th meeting of the Authority’s Executive Committee chaired by Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Minister Deepak Khadka on Friday. Previously, the Authority had a provision to provide a relief amount of more than Rs. 5 lakhs to the deceased employee’s family and offer employment to them up to three levels in case of fatal electrical accidents. Similarly, relief of more than Rs. 5 lakhs was also provided in the case of public fatalities.

During the meeting, Minister Khadka emphasized the importance of providing immediate relief to those affected by electrical accidents without any delay or excuses. Additionally, amendments were made to the Electricity Distribution Bylaws 2078 to improve the complaint registration process for dissatisfied consumers. The decision also included a reduction in the security deposit amount by 25% for consumers who repeatedly file complaints without understanding their electricity bills, making it a permanent adjustment of only 5%.

This decision was aimed at addressing the widespread dissatisfaction among consumers with regards to their electricity bills, ensuring that the economic pressure on the general public is reduced, thereby increasing their trust in the Nepal Electricity Authority.

Furthermore, the meeting also decided to terminate the contracts of institutions that failed to provide quality services despite agreements with the Authority. In areas where the national grid has been expanded to provide better services, the Authority will now directly provide services in those regions. The evaluation of institutions providing quality services will be conducted, and agreements will be continuously monitored based on the requirements.

Moreover, a decision was made in the meeting to establish an Administrative Review Committee under the coordination of the Secretary of the Ministry of Energy. This four-member committee will consist of the Executive Director of the Authority, an expert from the Department of Electricity Development, the Executive Director of the Authority, and the Secretary member, ensuring transparency and accountability in decision-making processes.

Regarding this news, Ramesh Khatri from Kansai Nepal News commented that the decisions made by the Authority are crucial for consumer and public safety and highlight the commitment to improvement and accountability.
