Exciting New Park, Asioe Bridge Square Coming East of JR Kobe Station. Displaying History.

A new public space, named the ‘Aioi Bridge Square (tentative name),’ is set to be created near JR Kobe Station in Kobe City. This initiative is part of a larger development project by Hankyu Hanshin Properties, which includes the construction of a 20-story high-rise condominium adjacent to the square. The concept images for the square reveal a design that caters to various community needs, such as providing space for food trucks during events and featuring roofed benches for visitors to rest comfortably, equipped with a “pavement that reduces surface temperature increase.”

The square’s name, Aioi Bridge Square, pays homage to the historic Aioi Bridge, which was the first wooden overpass in Japan, located near the Harborland area from JR Kobe Station. The temporary fencing around the construction site showcases the bridge’s significance in the area’s history, highlighting how it once connected the divided streets of Motomachi and Tamon.

The completion of Aioi Bridge Square is scheduled for 2027, aligning with the timeline for the high-rise condominium. This development is part of a broader urban transformation plan that includes converting areas like the D51 Square into pedestrian-friendly zones. These changes, though seemingly small individually, have the potential to alter the flow of people and contribute to a significant transformation in the neighborhood.

Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, shared his perspective on this development, stating that the creation of Aioi Bridge Square not only adds value to the urban landscape but also preserves the historical significance of the Aioi Bridge. He believes that such initiatives play a vital role in revitalizing urban spaces and enhancing community engagement.
