In an effort to enhance pedestrian accessibility, a construction project is underway to widen the sidewalks along the route to Shinko-cho in Kobe, Japan. The construction site is located at the intersection of Kyomachi-suji and National Route 2, known as the Kyobashi Intersection.

Heading north from the intersection, one can find a luxury car dealership for Porsche, and a short distance away, the Kobe City Museum situated in the former foreign settlement area. On the southern side, the elevated structure of the Hanshin Expressway is visible, leading to the upcoming opening of the La Suite Le Pan Building next month, along with attractions like the Ata Aquarium in the Shinko-cho area.

The sidewalk expansion is utilizing space adjacent to the parking lot of the national Kobe Second Joint Government Building. The area, previously sectioned off with fences and barricades for construction purposes, is expected to increase in size by approximately 1.5 to 2 times its original width.

As spring approaches, the opening of the Geilai On Arena Kobe will draw many pedestrians to this widened pathway, improving both convenience and aesthetics. The construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2025, in time for the arena’s inauguration.

From Ramesh Khatri of Kansai Nepal News: “The initiative to widen the sidewalks in Kobe demonstrates a commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure for the benefit of residents and visitors alike. Such developments not only prioritize pedestrian safety and accessibility but also contribute to the overall charm and functionality of the city.”
