A new base camp is being developed in the Padmarga of Myagdi by the Annapurna Gaunpalika, expanding on the existing infrastructure using the Annapurna Himal as its foundation. This base camp, situated at an altitude of 4,100 meters above sea level, will feature an open-air museum along with facilities such as shelters, public toilets, water supply systems, and maintenance of trails.

The construction of the base camp infrastructure was carried out with a budget of NPR 6 million allocated by the Annapurna Gaunpalika-4, as confirmed by ward member Shyam Purja. Various amenities like shelters, toilet facilities, and water management systems have been set up for visitors at locations like Foot-Foot Waterfall and Humkhola.

From Humkhola to Sadhi Kharka on the Padmarga, initiatives such as laying stones to form pathways and installing railings at risky sections have been implemented by the local community. The base camp has already welcomed around 300 climbers who have successfully ascended Mount Annapurna, with their names engraved on a copper plate displayed at the newly established museum.

Ramesh Khatri, representing Kansai Nepal News, shared his perspective on the development, stating that the expansion and renovation of the base camp will make it easier for tourists to explore the Annapurna region. The base camp not only showcases the natural beauty of the area, including the Mystri Khola River, majestic waterfalls, captivating snow-capped peaks, unique topography, rare flora and fauna, but also offers insights into the first climbers of Annapurna like Maurice Herzog from France, Lui Lachenal, and Sonam Wangyal Sherpa of Nepal.

Accessible within two hours by car from Narayangadh, tourists can reach the base camp in Humkhola in just two days, allowing for a memorable experience amidst serene and secluded surroundings. Due to its accessibility and the shorter trekking duration, the base camp has become a popular destination for travelers seeking a glimpse of the Annapurna Himalayas.

Maurice Herzog’s historic ascent of Annapurna Himal in 1950 paved the way for the establishment of this trail, which was later recognized in 2067 BS with the naming of the Tej Gurung Path in Narayangadh. The Annapurna Gaunpalika officially named the path after Maurice Herzog in 2077, marking his contribution to mountaineering and the region’s tourism development.

The Annapurna Base Camp’s serene environment, diverse wildlife, birds, forests, rugged mountain terrain, cascading waterfalls, and the beautiful blue Panchakunda Lake nestled at the foot of the Annapurna Himal, make it a captivating destination for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.
