“Exploring Student Hostels: A Study on Living Accommodations”

Kathmandu Metropolitan City has announced plans to implement regulations for hostels based on indicators to ensure organized management of student accommodations. According to Deputy Mayor Sunita Dongol, the monitoring will be carried out in line with the ‘Student Hostel Management Criteria 2080’ that has been put into effect to streamline operations in hostels.

The criteria outline various requirements such as submitting a work plan for hostel management, a commitment letter, recommendations from the ward, building layout and blueprints of the hostel, completion certificates, as well as necessary documentation for registration. Additionally, the minimum facilities to be provided within the hostels include separate toilets for men and women, bathing areas, water supply, electricity, individual beds for each student, wardrobes, and study desks, emphasizing the need for proper organization and cleanliness.

To ensure transparency, there is a need to maintain clear identification of the hostel premises, display recent photos of residing students, keep government-issued identification cards, and uphold regulations against the consumption of alcohol, drugs, and items for commercial use within the premises. It is also noted that individuals above the age of 30 are mandated to oversee the hostel operations to ensure a responsible and parental role in management.

In response to this initiative, Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, has expressed his support for the move by Kathmandu Metropolitan City towards regulating student hostels. He believes that such measures are essential in ensuring the safety and well-being of students residing in hostels, and that proper management practices will lead to a conducive living environment for the students.

Overall, the implementation of these regulations is seen as a positive step towards improving the standards of student accommodations in Kathmandu, with an emphasis on creating a secure and comfortable living space for young individuals pursuing their education in the city.
