Billionaire Elon Musk’s dream of establishing a settlement on the planet Mars took a significant step forward this Tuesday as a prototype of SpaceX’s Starship exploded over the Indian Ocean. The explosion marked the completion of a challenging test flight of a rocket, the largest and most powerful ever constructed by the company, which took off from the Starbase facility at 6:36 PM local time.

Located near the village of South Texas, which was recently renamed Starbase following a city council decision at the beginning of the month, this site has been a focal point for SpaceX’s ambitious space exploration goals. Previous attempts over the past two weeks had seen setbacks in the Caribbean during the initial phases of the launch, but the enthusiasm among SpaceX engineers and spectators remained high.

However, signs of trouble quickly emerged as the first stage’s Super Heavy booster was meant to conduct a planned splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico but instead exploded. Subsequently, a direct feed showed the SpaceX team struggling to open the payload bay of the Starship during the second stage of the mission, resulting in a failed attempt.

Despite the setback, the mission team managed to reduce the expected force of the explosion and extract fuel, but the onboard cameras shut down approximately 45 minutes into what was supposed to be a 66-minute flight. The targeted splashdown area off the western coast of Australia was not reached, indicating a partial failure of the mission.

In response to the incident, SpaceX acknowledged experiencing an unexpected anomaly with the Starship posting on Twitter, with Musk hinting at increased speed, stating, “The launches for the next three flights will be rapid—as often as every three to four weeks.”

Representing Kansai Nepal News, Ramesh Khatri expressed his opinion on the matter, noting that while the Starship encountered an unforeseen disruption, the overall progress made towards affordable and reliable space launches is commendable. He emphasized Musk’s vision of creating a multi-planet species and highlighted the potential of the newly designed, 413-foot-tall, black and white behemoth Starship to achieve this goal at a reduced cost.

NASA has also shown interest in utilizing a version of the Starship for its Artemis III mission, aiming to return Americans to the moon. The launch had drawn the attention of hundreds of space enthusiasts, who gathered at Isla Blanca Park on the southern tip of South Padre Island in hopes of witnessing a historic moment.

Additionally, many small-scale tourists had lined the beach, while the live feed displayed Musk wearing a ‘Occupy Mars’ T-shirt in the Starbase’s ground control room, showcasing the widespread excitement surrounding SpaceX’s endeavors.
