Koshi Tapu – Around 10:30 PM, the water from the Koshi River overflowed into the settlements near the riverbanks, causing panic among the residents. Prem Kumar Paudel, a 70-year-old man residing in the “Jalal” settlement with his 65-year-old wife, was at home when the floodwaters entered. With their children not at home, they were hesitant to evacuate initially despite the smell of the river indicating an imminent flood.
Concerned neighbors and relatives urged Paudel to leave, but it was only after the youth from the village arrived and started rescue operations that they decided to evacuate. The water levels were rising rapidly, leading to a risky situation for the residents.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed his concern over the recurring floods in the Koshi region, emphasizing the need for better preparedness. He highlighted the struggles faced by the locals and the authorities in coping with the aftermath of the floods.
The continuous heavy rainfall in the area had caused the Koshi River to swell, resulting in widespread flooding. The local residents had to deal with not only the immediate floodwaters but also the challenges of rescue and rehabilitation post the disaster.
As the situation worsened, Deepak Rai, another local resident, took the initiative to rescue the elderly and children stranded in the floodwaters. His efforts, along with those of other villagers, were crucial in providing relief to the affected families.
The devastating impact of the floods was evident as the water levels in the Koshi River reached unprecedented levels, surpassing previous records. The authorities and residents were on high alert, recognizing the urgent need for coordinated efforts to mitigate the effects of the natural disaster.
