The annual Chauri Mela has commenced in Ghattekhola, Mustang, a district in the Himalayan region, where locals and visitors alike gather to partake in this traditional event. The festival, known for its significance in promoting the indigenous culture and economy of the region, features a variety of activities including the consumption of valuable medicinal herbs found in the Himalayan forests.

Organized by the Himalayan Yak and Nak Conservation Sub-Committee, the fair aims to attract both domestic and international tourists over a period of 10 days. The committee’s chairman, Buddhiratna Tulachan, highlighted the importance of the event in boosting local businesses and supporting the hard work of farmers in the area. The Chauri Mela is not only a cultural celebration but also an opportunity for individuals to benefit from the medicinal properties of the Chauri’s blood-rich milk, believed to cure various ailments.

On the first day of the event, around 200 people reportedly consumed the Chauri’s blood, reinforcing the belief in its healing properties among the attendees. Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed his opinion, stating that the traditional nature of the fair not only enhances local trade and business but also provides additional support to farmers. He emphasized the festival’s role in addressing health issues faced by the community and ensuring a prosperous future for all participants.

In neighboring Annapurna Rural Municipality-6 in Myagdi, individuals like Deu Bahadur Garbuja and Bisan Purja have been actively participating in the festival for years, reaping the benefits of the Chauri’s blood consumption. Residents of Dhampu in Thasang Rural Municipality-3, such as Bisan Purja, have also attested to the positive effects of consuming the Chauri’s blood, citing improvements in their health post-consumption.

The Chauri Mela serves as a platform for the sale of blood-rich Chauri from yak and Chauri herds in various locations within Mustang, including Muli, Hyangden, Khalkyu, Bata Sedanda, Sanusarepahad, Chakthang, Marche, and Nupsang. With approximately 700 Chauri belonging to 10 farmer groups under the committee’s jurisdiction, the festival continues to promote the region’s unique cultural heritage and economic prosperity.
