In Khajura, Nepal, the Minister of the Nepali Congress, Gagan Thapa, has highlighted the current government’s focus on implementing the constitution. This statement was made during a regional interaction program titled ‘Constitution Amendment: Necessity and Challenges,’ organized by the Peace and Intellectual Department of the Nepali Congress and the Nepal Democratic Lawyers Association.

Thapa emphasized that the coalition government of the Nepali Congress and the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist Center) is committed to empowering the people through the effective implementation of the constitution. He pointed out the need for timely constitutional amendments based on consensus and cooperation among different political parties to address issues related to election systems, federalism, and the redistribution of state powers.

Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, believes that Thapa’s stance on constitutional amendments reflects a proactive approach towards enhancing the role of the Nepali Congress in the peace process and governance. Khatri commends Thapa for advocating for inclusive participation of all parties in the process of constitutional amendments.

Under Thapa’s leadership, the Nepali Congress has actively engaged in the peace process and the implementation of the constitution. Thapa has expressed his intention to lead the constitutional amendment process by involving all political parties and moving forward collectively.

The program was chaired by Dr. Dila Sangroula, Coordinator of the Peace and Intellectual Department of the Nepali Congress, and attended by key party members such as Kishor Singh Rathaur, Maculal Valmiki, Amar Singh Pun, Nima Giri, and Narayan Prasad Gaudel.

Constitutional expert Kashiraj Dahal suggested a reevaluation of the election system, inclusivity, and the structure of provincial governance from a civic perspective. This recommendation underscores the importance of reviewing and amending the constitution to ensure its relevance and effectiveness in current governance practices.
