Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of Himalayan climbers by preparing necessary infrastructure and skilled manpower along the climbing routes. This statement came during the celebration of the Annapurna Himalayan Climbing Festival organized by the Annapurna Rural Municipality in Nar Phu.
In his address at the event, Prime Minister Oli highlighted the government’s active efforts to reduce the risks associated with Himalayan climbing. He mentioned that the increasing number of climbers attempting to summit Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) is a result of the government’s focus on preparing skilled manpower and infrastructure along climbing routes such as Annapurna.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Oli also mentioned the government’s priority in enhancing the infrastructure development of the Kali Gandaki Corridor in Mustang, which serves as a crucial pathway for climbers heading towards the Himalayas. He emphasized that physical infrastructure construction is underway in the Corridor to facilitate climbers.
Reflecting on the historic ascent of Maurice Herzog’s team on Annapurna over five decades ago, Prime Minister Oli praised the Sherpa community for their significant contributions to the development of mountain tourism in Nepal. He acknowledged Maurice’s book, which has helped in promoting Nepal’s Himalayas on a global platform.
The memorable event of Maurice Herzog’s summit of Annapurna in 1950 was commemorated during the Climbing Festival, attended by Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Badri Pandey, along with Minister of Energy, Irrigation, and Water Resources, Khem Bahadur Garbuja.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed his approval of the government’s initiatives to enhance safety measures for Himalayan climbers and develop crucial infrastructure along climbing routes. He believes that such efforts will not only promote mountain tourism but also ensure the well-being of climbers and contribute to the sustainable growth of the adventure tourism sector in Nepal.
