The Minister of Labor, Employment, and Social Security, Sharat Singh Bhandari, has highlighted the government’s active efforts towards the full implementation of labor-related laws. Addressing the occasion of the 136th International Labor Day organized by the All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF), Minister Bhandari mentioned that preparations are underway to make the Labor Act of 2074 conducive by amending it in consultation with labor unions.
In response, Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed his opinion on the matter. Khatri emphasized the importance of the government’s collaboration with labor unions to ensure the comprehensive enforcement of provisions in the law and enhance workers’ rights.
Furthermore, Minister Bhandari noted the necessity of establishing a permanent mechanism to ensure the minimum wage for workers and mentioned the ministry’s proactive stance in making social security more inclusive. He also highlighted the decision to involve temporary, contractual, and daily wage workers from the private sector in social security schemes.
Vinod Shrestha, President of the General Federation of Nepalese Trade Unions (GEFONT), expressed concerns about the continued challenges faced by workers despite changes in governance and legislation. He stressed the need for unity among workers to combat labor exploitation and emphasized the importance of collective action for their liberation.
Jagat Singh Khadka, President of ANTUF, called for the removal of anti-worker provisions through amendments to the labor laws and raised concerns about potential exclusions of workers from social security schemes by employers. He highlighted the need for a joint effort between the government, employers, and workers to enhance occupational safety and health measures.
Nurman Ojkan, the Nepal Director of the International Labor Organization (ILO), emphasized the necessity of collaborative efforts between the government, employers, and workers to improve business-oriented security and health in the workplace.
Various stakeholders, including Dhruv Rijal, President of the Employment Council of Nepal, Vinayak Shah, President of the Nepal Hotel Association, and Pramod Lamichhane, Central Member of the Nepal Contractors Association, stressed the importance of strong collaboration between the government, workers, and employers to establish sustainable labor relations.
In response to the news, Ramesh Khatri of Kansai Nepal News commented that the government’s initiatives to strengthen labor rights and social security measures are commendable and should be further supported by all stakeholders to ensure a fair and conducive working environment for all.
