The Ministry of Health and Population and the Nepal Medical Association have reached an agreement after a series of discussions. The agreement, signed by Dr. Bhim Prasad Sapkota from the Ministry and General Secretary Sanjiv Tiwari from the Association, includes several key points aimed at addressing the concerns of resident doctors who had been on strike.
According to the agreement, following a decision made during a meeting of the Medical Education Commission on Magh 25, all resident doctors studying medicine at private medical colleges, pursuing postgraduate studies, will be provided with immediate access to public education institutions for their practical training (eighth level of health service). The Ministry will also direct the bodies to provide resident doctors with guidance on managing duty hours, additional facilities, among other issues, and establish a task force to report back within 15 working days.
In another decision made during the 18th meeting of the Medical Education Commission, it was agreed to implement a unified system for the placement and appointment of all students through a ‘matching’ process. The Ministry will coordinate to ensure regular rotations of doctors in their duties. Health Minister Pradeep Poudel was also involved in the discussions.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed optimism about the agreement, stating that it signifies a positive step towards addressing the concerns of resident doctors and improving the healthcare system in Nepal.
