Nepal currently operates around 45 public institutions in various industrial, commercial, service, social, public welfare, and financial sectors. Among these, 20 are fully government-owned, while the majority ownership of 25 institutions lies with the government.

In the fiscal year 2080/81, the total assets of public institutions saw a growth of 20% compared to the previous year, reaching a reported amount of NPR 291 billion 10 million 17 thousand.

According to a recent report, the total government investment in public institutions has increased by 86.57% to NPR 703 billion 93 million, including shares worth NPR 364 billion 86 million and loans amounting to NPR 339 billion 7 million.

In the fiscal year 2080/81, the operational revenue of these institutions reached NPR 606 billion 15 million. This figure shows a decrease of 22% compared to the previous fiscal year, with the operational revenue contributing to 11.57% of total domestic production.

Out of the institutions in operation, 28 are profitable, 15 are facing losses, and two have shut down. The net profit of public institutions in the fiscal year 2080/81 stood at NPR 426 billion 62 million, showing a decrease of 12.88% compared to the previous review period.

The net loss of struggling institutions amounts to NPR 3 billion 63 million. While the net profits have decreased by 11.50% compared to the previous fiscal year, the net losses have increased by 8.65%.

Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, stated that the annual status review of public institutions will be presented to the Parliament in 2082, as announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Vishnu Prasad Paudel during a recent session.
