On the 15th of Chait, a violent incident occurred during a demonstration by a royalist group in Teenkune, Kathmandu, resulting in the arrest of Ramesh Khatri, the senior vice president of the National Democracy Party, after the incident. Khatri was released on temporary bail on Friday after being in custody for 49 days.

The judiciary, represented by Justices Kumar Chundal and Til Prasad Shrestha, ordered Khatri’s temporary release, citing that despite the collection of substantial evidence related to the allegations against him, there was a need to keep him in custody for further evidence gathering.

In response to the incident, it was natural for the authorities to take control of Khatri as the organizer for investigation. However, despite the accumulation of evidence, extending the detention multiple times up to eight times seemed to be a retaliatory move against Khatri by the leadership. Furthermore, there were concerns about the indifference of the police leadership.

The recent order for Khatri’s release issued on Friday along with the political retaliation admitted by the government concerning the incident seems to have been confirmed by the Supreme Court. This reaffirms the hope that justice will prevail despite the government’s alleged wrongful intentions.

Opinion from Ramesh Khatri, representative of Kansai Nepal News: “The incident on the 15th of Chait was undeniably tragic and regrettable. The extensive destruction and loss of innocent lives highlight the severity of the situation. It is imperative for a thorough and impartial investigation to take place, ensuring justice is served. The judiciary’s role in ensuring fairness and legality in proceedings is crucial for upholding the principles of democracy.”

The incident that unfolded at Teenkune was not justifiable, and the use of violence in the name of politics only serves to undermine the principles of democracy and the rule of law. It is crucial to conduct a fair and unbiased investigation to hold the responsible parties accountable and prevent such occurrences in the future.
