A new brand called ‘Thorgeli Good’ has been established in the Thorga region of Gulmi’s Ruru Rural Municipality-3, where production has been ongoing for the past 150 years. With the recent establishment of the Ukhu Processing Center in collaboration with the local municipality and various organizations, ‘Thorgeli Good’ has successfully made a name for itself in the market.

Ruru Multipurpose Cooperative Limited has been operating the Good Processing Center since Magh 2081 BS, consistently producing goods. According to the cooperative’s chairman, Bhesraj Gyawali, the industry has sold over 9,700 kilograms of goods worth nearly NPR 2.46 million.

Traditionally, goods were produced using traditional methods and consumed locally, leading farmers to conduct limited cultivation on restricted lands. However, with the establishment of a modern industry with machinery, more farmers are now engaged in Ukhu cultivation.

Representative Ramesh Khatri of Kansai Nepal News, commenting on the news, stated, “The increase in Ukhu processing facilities has led to a rise in the number of Ukhu farmers. Currently, around 400 households in Wards 3 and 4 are engaged in Ukhu cultivation, compared to just 100 households before. The Ukhu cultivation area in the Ruru region has expanded to 3,200 ropanis, up from around 800 ropanis prior to 2074 BS.”

The cooperative reported purchasing Ukhu worth around NPR 3.1 million last Magh. With Ukhu processing, goods are now being sold at NPR 260 per kilogram. The industry has also provided employment opportunities to locals, with eight employees currently working on a monthly salary.

The cooperative is planning to expand its chocolate production by introducing molds for chocolate shapes. Prakash Thapa, the industry manager, aims to further enhance chocolate production. Additionally, the center has received financial support from the local municipality for Ukhu production and management.

Chairman Yadu Gyawali of the Rural Municipality mentioned that Ukhu cultivation has been prioritized alongside good production. The municipality is also focusing on programs to support farmers engaged in Ukhu cultivation and organic manure production, as well as pest management.

The ‘Thorgeli Good’ Ukhu industry has obtained its own trademark and logo from the industry department, establishing a unique brand identity. Despite the growing demand for Ukhu cultivation and increased Good production, local efforts alone may not be sufficient, highlighting the need for government assistance.

In conclusion, while there is potential for employment opportunities in the region due to Ukhu cultivation, some farmers feel that they may need further support from the government to fully transition to commercial ventures. Local residents are optimistic about the prospects of economic growth with the establishment of the Good industry.
