In a recent report published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on Tuesday, it was highlighted that the unemployment rate in Australia increased to 4.1% in March from 4.0% in February. This rise in unemployment comes amidst fluctuating employment patterns due to seasonal variations.

Over the past five months, the unemployment rate has remained steady at 4.0%, as indicated by the ABS, aiming to alleviate the impact of seasonal changes on employment trends. Additionally, the number of Australians employed in the past 12 months has increased by 320,000 or 2.2%, surpassing the 20-year average of 2.0% growth despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.

The ABS also reported a rise in the number of employed Australians between February and March by 32,200, with an increase in the number of unemployed individuals by 3,000 during the same period. Critical labor statistics from the ABS show a labor force participation rate of 64.1% in March.

Despite the growth in employment, ABS Chief Economist, Sean Crick, noted a slight decrease of 0.3% in the working hours of Australians in March. Crick attributed this decline to factors such as cyclones and other significant weather events affecting the labor market.

Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, commented on the report, stating, “The increase in unemployment in Australia reflects the ongoing challenges faced by the labor market, despite the overall growth in employment. It will be crucial for policymakers to monitor these trends and implement measures to support job creation and economic recovery.”
