In a recent development, Iran has raised objections during a United Nations Security Council meeting regarding Tehran’s nuclear program. On Wednesday, Iran reportedly sent letters to diplomats from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, seeking clarification on their stance on the nuclear program.
The meeting, which was perceived by the United States as being biased and political, was criticized by the American delegation for lacking any technical or legal merit. The U.S. mission accused Iran of engaging in provocative and politically charged behavior during the discussions.
The International Atomic Energy Agency’s latest report on Iran’s nuclear program prompted several member states to request the Security Council meeting. Iran has announced an increase in uranium enrichment levels to 60%, while weapons-grade uranium typically requires enrichment levels of 90%.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry stated that three diplomatic representatives were summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for direct inquiries regarding the joint commitment with the United States and the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.
In 2015, Iran reached a historic agreement on its nuclear program with the United Kingdom, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States. However, in 2018, President Trump withdrew from the agreement and imposed stringent sanctions once again.
Following the return of the White House administration, President Trump called for a new nuclear agreement with Iran in January. Nevertheless, Tehran has indicated that as long as punitive measures persist, such an agreement may not be achievable.
China has also been involved in trilateral nuclear discussions with Russia and Iran, indicating a potential avenue for multilateral dialogue on nuclear matters.
