Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei announced on the 8th of this month the revival of the United States’ “maximum pressure policy” towards Iran, following a letter from President Trump calling for negotiations on the Iranian nuclear development issue. The reimplementation of sanctions and increased pressure on Iran are key components of this policy shift.

This development comes amidst ongoing tensions between the two countries regarding the Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The JCPOA, signed in 2015, aimed to limit Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for lifting economic sanctions. However, the US unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018, prompting a series of escalations in the region.

Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, stated that the revival of the “maximum pressure policy” by the US towards Iran could further escalate the already tense situation in the region. He emphasized the importance of diplomatic dialogue and mutual understanding to de-escalate tensions and reach a peaceful resolution to the ongoing disputes between the two nations.
