Kathmandu: Rekha Gupta is set to become the new Chief Minister of Delhi. Her name was approved by a meeting of the party’s organizational team at the Delhi office of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Present at this meeting was Ravi Shankar Prasad, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who announced Rekha Gupta’s name in front of journalists, stating that her name was proposed by Pravesh Varma, Satish Upadhyay, and Vijendra Gupta, and it was approved by nine members. He further expressed confidence that they would all soon be heading to the governor’s house.
Expressing her gratitude, Rekha Gupta thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, National President Nadda, Veerendra Sachdeva, Ravi Shankar Prasad, and all party workers. She is positioned to become Delhi’s fourth female Chief Minister, following in the footsteps of Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi.
Representatives from the Aam Aadmi Party, including Arvind Kejriwal and former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, also extended their congratulations. Both leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party have declared their full support for the new Chief Minister of Delhi to further the development of the city.
Recently, in the concluded legislative assembly elections, Rekha Gupta defeated Bandana Kumari from the Shalimar Bagh seat with nearly 30,000 votes. In the 2020 elections, she had lost from the same seat due to a transfer of votes. Rekha Gupta has also served as a councilor for the Delhi Municipal Corporation and was the president of the Delhi University Students’ Union.
Rekha’s name had been in discussions for the Chief Minister post after her victory in the Delhi elections. Analysts believe that her announcement may help the BJP attract women and the global community. Her political career began at the Delhi University’s All India Students’ Council. In 1996, she became the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU). She has also held the position of General Secretary of the Delhi BJP Women’s Wing and National Secretary of the BJP Youth Wing from 2004 to 2006.
Born in 1974 in Jind district, Haryana, Rekha Gupta has been active in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) since childhood. She completed her B.Com and LLB from Delhi University. In 1998, she married Manish Gupta, a resident of Delhi.
According to her affidavit filed with the Election Commission, Rekha Gupta declared a total income of Rs. 6,92,050 for the financial year 2023-24. During the same period, her husband, Manish Gupta, reported an income of Rs. 97,33,570.
