Japan has announced an innovative redesign of its passport, incorporating advanced security measures to combat forgery. The revamped passports, which feature a plastic photo page embedded with a chip, will be available to applicants starting from March 24 next year.
Key Features of the New Passport
The newly designed passports boast several advanced features aimed at ensuring their authenticity and preventing tampering. One of the standout elements is the plastic photo page, adorned with a sakura (cherry blossom) pattern that appears when tilted. Enhanced Production Process
Unlike the current passports, which are produced locally at municipal government offices and diplomatic missions abroad, the new design will be manufactured by the National Printing Bureau—the same entity responsible for producing Japan’s banknotes. As a result, the processing time for issuing passports is expected to increase to approximately two weeks, compared to the current one-week timeframe.
Rollout Timeline
The updated passports will be available for Japanese nationals starting from March 24, 2025. The enhanced production process and the incorporation of cutting-edge technology signify Japan’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its travel documents while showcasing its cultural icons.
