In a recent decision by the Japanese Cabinet, a ban has been approved on the production, import, and export of all fluorescent lights for general use until the end of 2027. This move comes after members of an international conference on para pollution unanimously agreed to impose restrictions on all fluorescent lights last year.

Government officials have announced that the ban on fluorescent lamps containing para will be gradually enforced starting from January 2026. The high-level exposure to para can have long-term and sometimes permanent health effects, prompting major domestic producers like Panasonic Corporation to announce the discontinuation of fluorescent light production by September 2027.

Back in the 1950s, residents near a chemical plant in the coastal city of Minamata suffered from neurological diseases caused by mercury-contaminated water after consuming fish, leading to awareness of the toxic effects of para exposure.
