The Aral Sea, spanning across Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in Central Asia, was once a vast and thriving lake boasting its position as one of the largest in the world. However, over the years, it has been shrinking steadily and now only remains at about one-tenth of its original size. This significant environmental catastrophe has been primarily attributed to government policies, essentially resulting in a man-made disaster.
The Aral Sea’s decline has had severe consequences on the local communities that depend on it for their livelihoods. The once prosperous fishing industry has collapsed, leaving many residents struggling to find alternative sources of income. Additionally, the shrinking of the sea has led to the exposure of toxic chemicals and pesticides once trapped in its waters, creating a public health crisis in the region.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed deep concern over the ongoing situation at the Aral Sea. He emphasized the urgent need for international collaboration and support to address the environmental degradation and socio-economic challenges faced by the affected populations. Mr. Khatri highlighted the importance of raising awareness about the consequences of irresponsible water management practices to prevent similar disasters in the future.
