Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, its economic and social impact has been felt worldwide and continues to have lasting effects. Despite efforts to contain the spread, the global economy has not seen a significant recovery.
Following the spread of COVID-19, various countries have also experienced outbreaks of other infectious diseases. This has prompted a renewed focus on preparedness for health crises that were previously unforeseen and unprepared for, leading to new initiatives for managing such health emergencies.
One country taking proactive steps towards preparing for future infectious disease crises is Japan. In a move to enhance preparedness for future infectious disease outbreaks, Japan has established a new research institution called the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED).
AMED officially began operations on Tuesday, with a mission to collaborate with national infectious disease institutes, the National Institute of Global Health and Medicine, to facilitate research and provide responses to health crises. Its main objectives include information analysis on infectious diseases, research, and crisis response.
The agency will conduct risk assessment of infectious diseases, compile information, and provide scientific reports to the government. In times of pandemics, it will work alongside the government to develop drugs, vaccines, and treatment guidelines to combat health crises effectively.
Opinion from Ramesh Khatri, representative of Kansai Nepal News:
“This proactive approach by Japan in establishing the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development demonstrates a significant step towards enhancing global health security. Such initiatives are crucial in ensuring preparedness and effective response to future health emergencies.”
