Job Discrimination in China: Pregnant Women Targeted

Beijing, China – In today’s competitive job market, securing a good job requires skills, educational qualifications, and experience. Despite having these, landing a job can still be challenging. Employers use various methods to select candidates, and some companies have gone as far as mandating pregnancy tests for female applicants.

A recent social media uproar highlights such a case. Chinese lawyers have filed lawsuits against at least 16 companies for conducting unauthorized pregnancy tests on female job applicants. These companies, without informing the applicants, tested them and disqualified those who were found to be pregnant.

The incident came to light in Nantong District, Jiangsu Province, when a woman filed a complaint. According to CNN, she discovered that her pregnancy was revealed through these tests, leading to the revocation of her job offer.

Lawyers have accused these companies of illegally conducting pregnancy tests and violating women’s rights to equal employment opportunities. One of the affected women was pregnant, and when the company found out, they canceled her job appointment.

Such actions are not only against Chinese law, which prohibits pregnancy testing as part of the hiring process, but also a violation of women’s overall human rights. The law in China clearly states that conducting pregnancy tests during the recruitment process is illegal and is considered a breach of women’s rights to equal employment opportunities.

Following the revelation of this incident, Chinese authorities have launched investigations. Preparations are underway to take action against these discriminatory companies, ensuring such violations are addressed and prevented in the future.
