The ‘Justice Summit 2025’ was recently held in Kathmandu with the aim of ensuring effective legal implementation to end caste-based discrimination and divisions. Representatives from various sectors such as law professionals, students, journalists, and civil society participated in the summit organized in collaboration with ‘Dalit Lives Matter Global Alliance’ and ‘Global Legal Defense Fund’.
During the event, three working papers were presented on topics such as the constitution, federalism, inclusion, Dalit women and justice, and tackling caste-based discrimination. Legal experts, political leaders, and civil society representatives emphasized the need for serious and responsible action by the state to put an end to all forms of discrimination.
As the summit concluded, Minister of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, Ajay Kumar Chaurasia, highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing issues related to caste-based discrimination and emphasized the government’s policy and legal accountability towards ending discrimination.
Ramesh Khatri, representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed his opinion on the news, stating that the efforts made during the summit are crucial in ensuring social justice and equality in Nepal.
Furthermore, despite the establishment of the National Dalit Commission as a constitutional body, incidents of caste-based violence continue to pose a challenge in the country. Women, Dalits, and even Madhesi Dalit women face oppression, making it essential to strengthen the implementation of existing laws and create new legislation to protect the rights of marginalized communities.
In conclusion, while the Justice Summit 2025 marked a significant step towards addressing caste-based discrimination, it is imperative for key stakeholders like the government, security forces, legal institutions, and the judiciary to actively engage in the effective implementation of laws and policies to safeguard the rights of Dalit and marginalized communities.
