Kathmandu is currently experiencing an increase in air pollution due to the lack of sufficient rainfall resulting in hazy clouds in the sky. Vinu Maharjan, a meteorologist, attributes this phenomenon to the local air impact and the influence of the western low-pressure system, which has led to a deficit in rainfall. He points out that while some parts of the country have seen snowfall and light rain, the pollution levels have not decreased. This situation is expected to persist for at least three more days.
According to the ‘Air Quality Index,’ Kathmandu is listed as the fifth most polluted city in the world today, with an air pollution index of 163. This places the city in a concerning position in terms of air quality compared to other highly polluted cities. Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, has been identified as the most polluted city globally, followed by Beijing in China in second place, Dhaka in Bangladesh in third place, and New Delhi in India in fourth place.
Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed concern regarding the escalating air pollution levels in Kathmandu. He emphasized the urgent need for effective measures to address this critical issue and protect the health and well-being of the residents. Khatri highlighted the importance of raising awareness and implementing sustainable solutions to combat air pollution in the city.
