The ongoing political turmoil in Nepal has taken a dramatic turn as the National Democracy Party (Rastriya Prajatantra Party) President, Kamal Thapa, was arrested on Sunday amidst the establishment of a royalist movement. The district police chief of Kathmandu Valley, SP Raj Bohara, confirmed that Thapa, along with others, was brought under control to quell the unrest.
Thapa was taken into custody by the security forces as part of maintaining order during the royalist movement initiated by monarchists at Narayanchaur in Kathmandu. The movement, spearheaded by a committee led by Suvashree leadership, has been demanding the restoration of the monarchy, Hindu state status, rejection of federalism, and other radical reforms.
The District Administration Office in Kathmandu had imposed a prohibition order on the Narayanhiti Palace Museum area until July 24, following which they changed the venue of their program. The royalists who have been staging protests centered in Kathmandu are set to demonstrate in the Narayanchaur area from 2 p.m. on Sunday, led by RPP’s Minister Sharad Raj Pathak.
The joint people’s movement led by the Suvashree leadership has been carrying out indefinite protests since Jestha 15. This movement has garnered support from parties such as RPP and RPP Nepal.
Ramesh Khatri, representative of Kansai Nepal News, commented that the arrest of Kamal Thapa marks a significant development in the ongoing political unrest in Nepal. He emphasized the need for dialogue and peaceful resolution to address the grievances fueling the current wave of protests.
