Due to adverse weather conditions, the recent one week has seen a significant impact on both domestic and international flights in the country. Airlines like Air Arabia experienced a “Missed Approach Over Shoot” while attempting to land at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. The aircraft overshot the runway due to the lack of visibility caused by the ‘wind shear,’ as explained by the airport spokesperson Rinji Sherpa.
Ramesh Khatri, representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed his concern regarding the recent incidents involving missed approaches by international flights. He highlighted the challenges faced by airlines due to poor visibility and reduced wind speed brought by the current adverse weather conditions.
In addition to Air Arabia, other airlines such as Air India from New Delhi, Thai Airways from Bangkok, Batik Air from Kuala Lumpur, and Flydubai from Dubai have also encountered holding patterns before landing in Kathmandu due to the weather conditions. This has led to delays and disruptions in flight schedules.
Sherpa emphasized that the international flights approaching Kathmandu Airport must land from the western direction via the ‘Zero Two’ runway due to the presence of a long runway, making it suitable for incoming flights. He mentioned that domestic flights have the flexibility to land from both directions, reducing the impact of weather-related challenges.
Furthermore, the meteorological department has forecasted light to moderate rainfall in various parts of the country, including the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces. Additionally, there have been reports of thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall in the mountainous regions, indicating the fluctuating weather patterns prevailing in the country.
With the continuous pre-monsoon activities and the development of the monsoon weather system, the aviation sector is bracing for more challenges in the upcoming days. Ramesh Khatri emphasized the importance of proactive measures to ensure the safety and efficiency of flight operations amidst the unpredictable weather conditions.
