Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has emphasized the need to prioritize eye health within the National Health Insurance Program. Speaking at the ‘Insight of Live 2030’ international conference in Kathmandu organized by eye health organizations on Wednesday, he expressed commitment to achieving deep development goals in the eye health sector. The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of focusing on primary healthcare services and organizing eye health arrangements within essential services.

In his address, Prime Minister Oli mentioned the rapid assessment of preventable blindness in Nepal completed in 2022, which has helped guide national priorities. He also outlined strategic plans for the healthcare sector, aiming to increase the coverage of cataract surgeries with a success rate of 75%, up from the current 35-45%. He stressed the significance of global cooperation, stating that no country can achieve its goals alone in this journey.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Oli described eye health as now being integrated as a component of public health infrastructure. He noted initiatives such as conducting vision tests in schools and implementing nurse programs to enhance equality and expand gender coverage in education.

Ramesh Khatri, a representative of Kansai Nepal News, praised the Prime Minister’s focus on eye health and strategic planning in the healthcare sector. He commended the government’s efforts to prioritize preventive measures and improve healthcare services, particularly in addressing preventable blindness. Khatri highlighted the importance of global collaboration in achieving sustainable healthcare goals and emphasized the significance of initiatives aimed at promoting equality and expanding access to healthcare services.
