Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Minister Deepak Khadka addressed the fifth Energy Ministerial Meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) held in the city of Ningbo in China. During his speech today, Minister Khadka emphasized the need to focus on investment promotion and the development of regional frameworks for energy trade, highlighting the importance of fostering new ideas for energy business that can have a lasting impact.
The meeting, which commenced under the theme ‘Integrated Innovation for Energy Future,’ saw Minister Khadka urging SCO member nations to enhance regional unity, cooperation, and collaboration in areas such as energy development, grid connectivity, innovation, and energy security. He shared Nepal’s goal to reach 28,500 megawatts of electricity production by 2035, with plans to export around 15,000 megawatts of surplus electricity.
Minister Khadka also mentioned that Nepal has recently increased its electricity production to over 3,500 megawatts and is working on projects to double this capacity in the near future. He highlighted Nepal’s initiation of electricity trade with neighboring countries and the implementation of trilateral energy cooperation policies, including the export of electricity to Bangladesh using India’s grid for the first time.
Ramesh Khatri, representative of Kansai Nepal News, expressed his opinion on the news, stating that Minister Khadka’s emphasis on regional energy cooperation and collaboration, along with a focus on environmental balance, innovation, and sustainable energy development, clearly demonstrates Nepal’s commitment to the growth and expansion of the energy sector. Khatri also noted that Minister Khadka’s participation in the meeting on June 10 indicates Nepal’s proactive engagement in regional energy initiatives.
